I am most like Kitty Which Chimp Are U?

You are most like Kitty.
HSUS MySpace Page | Take the Quiz!

Kitty is the leader of the three chimps at Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch right here in Texas. She's serious and in charge of what happens with the group. She'll quickly quell any behavior she deems inappropriate.

Kitty is also a big fan of trading. If she has something she shouldn't, she's usually willing to trade it for something else. Kitty is deliberate and does not engage in frivolous behavior, nor will she waste energy doing something that won't result in getting what she wants. She seizes opportunities to act, but sometimes hesitates to try new things.

Kitty was rescued from the now-defunct Coulston Foundation in New Mexico, where she was used to breed chimps for medical research. Her laboratory caretaker feared that once Kitty was too old to reproduce, she might be subjected to experimentation herself, so she worked to secure Kitty's transfer to a sanctuary. Now, Kitty's laboratory days are behind her forever -- but not all research chimps are so lucky.

Take the quiz and find out which chimp you are most like :)

Victory!

I dedicate this post to the dog I featured in a previous post and to all mistreated animals everywhere.

I want to share this joyous letter and news from Wayne Purcell, President and CEO of The Humane Society of The United States:

Dear Bobbie,

I wanted to be the first to share with you some fantastic news. Today President Bush signed the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act into law. This is the culmination of an almost six-year campaign by The Humane Society of the United States and our allies to enact meaningful federal penalties for animal fighting.

The law takes effect immediately. It provides felony penalties for interstate commerce, import and export related to animal fighting activities, including commerce in cockfighting weapons. It will make it much harder for criminals who engage in dogfighting and cockfighting to continue their operations. Each violation of the federal law may bring up to three years in jail and up to a $250,000 fine for perpetrators.

We are fortunate to have had steadfast Congressional leadership on this issue. But this campaign would not have been a success without your tireless efforts. Thank you again to each of you who sent emails, made phone calls, wrote letters and visited your federal legislators on Capitol Hill and in their home districts.

This victory reminds us to never to give up, and that there are rewards for compassionate action and perseverance. Please share this tremendous news with others and let them know that you had a part in making it happen.

Sincerely,

Wayne Pacelle

A Great Day In New Mexico

Today was a great day in New Mexico when Governor Bill Richardson signed into law legislation banning cockfighting. This leaves Louisiana as the only state remaining where this brutal bloodsport is still legal. Read more about this major victory for animals. There is hope!

Year Of The Pig

Mark 2007 as the Year Of The Pig. Two companies, Smithfield Foods and Maple Leaf foods, have announced that they will phase out gestation crates in their pig farms. Click here to see a slide show of really bright and happy pigs.

Pigs

I received this letter from HSUS.org telling of an humane victory for pigs and just had to share it with you. This is a very worthy organization and there are many things that can be done that are not monetary. Supporting these causes by contacting your senator is just one way.

Dear Bobbie,
I have some great news to share with you.
Smithfield Foods, Inc., the nation's largest pork producer with 1.2 million breeding sows, announced today it will phase out the confinement of pigs in gestation crates over the next decade.

You may recall ballot initiatives in Arizona and Florida where The HSUS led the way for breeding pigs. In 2002, Florida voters approved a ban on gestation crates in their state, and in 2006, Arizona voters did likewise, in spite of a well-financed opposition campaign from factory farming interests.

Gestation crates are 2-foot by 7-foot metal cages used to confine breeding pigs for months on end. Pigs confined suffer leg and joint problems and psychosis resulting from extreme boredom and frustration. Confinement in gestation crates is so abusive that the entire European Union is phasing out the practice, with a total ban taking effect in 2013.

The move by Smithfield is an earthquake for the pork industry. This is a clear signal from a top producer that this cruel confinement has no place in the agricultural sector. With the recent political victories against gestation crates and now this news from Smithfield, the writing is certainly on the wall: gestation crate confinement will soon become a thing of the past.

Thank you for all you do for animals every day--please consider this your victory as well.

Sincerely,Wayne Pacelle
President & CEO The Humane Society of the United States

Once more I'm asking you to endorse the bill in congress which will firm up the laws against animal fighting. This is a cruel, cruel sport.

A Route Of Evanescense

I found a dead hummingbird and buried it beneath the hibiscus with an upturned hibiscus flower to mark the spot.

A Route of Evanescence
With a revolving Wheel --
A Resonance of Emerald --
A Rush of Cochineal --
And every Blossom on the Bush
Adjusts its tumbled Head --
The mail from Tunis, probably,
An easy Morning’s Ride --
