That's a funny cartoon. Jorge frequently asks me if I have anything to read!

Did you like the book Growth of the Soil by Knut Hamsun?

Have you ever read The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver?

Yes to both books. You loaned me Growth of the Soil and I loved it, also had read The Poisonwood Bible a few years ago and it still sticks with me.

I've gone through my bookshelves for titles and to my surprise learned that the majority of books I've loved most are nonfiction essays and travelogues. In any case, here is a lean list of some of my very favorite novels from that browsing:

The Stones for Ibarra by Hariet Doerr

An Imaginary Life by David Malouf

The Story of Zahra by Hanan al-Shaykh

The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

The Soujourner by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings

The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles

A Feather on the Breath of God by Sigrid Nunez

Crystal Mountain by Belle Norman Rugh -- a children's story but very well done. Rugh is part of the AUB founding family.

P.S. I'm getting ready to read The Scarlet Letter...for the first time.

Thanks for your best list, I appreciate your compliling it for me. At your recommendation a few years ago I read The Stones for Ibarra, wonderful book. Have already read Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings as well as Paul Bowles on your recommendation before. Gosh. I read too much.
